Talkin' About re-coat...
This was originally exciting for us because finally we'd be able to help our customers dispose of their unwanted, usable latex paint--you know, all the cans and cans of paint people typically have piled up in their basement.
Before re-coat, there really wasn't any regular way of getting rid of old latex paint. In fact, even the county web sites and environmental organizations recommended that, for latex paint, your best bet is to dry it up and toss it (if you can't use it up or donate it).

The "Dispose of Your Old Latex Paint" Test
Here's something interesting: Go to Google and type "dispose of latex paint" and then your city and state (or even, your county) and hit "enter."
What you'll find--at least 95% of you--is that there's nowhere to take your old latex paint for disposal. Even the "Hazardous Materials" handlers won't take it. In fact, all you'll really find at any of the websites you visit will be a bunch of information about how to dry the paint out so you can throw it in the garbage.
Unfortnuately, if you're not inclined to add your paint to the ever increasing mounds of garbage in our landfills, then really, your only other options are to: Use it on another project, donate it, or keep it. Forever.
Pretty disappointing, isn't it? Pretty disappointing that with all the focus on being green and caring for the environment, the best our county officials can offer us is some advice about the best way to throw away unwanted but otherwise usable latex paints.
OK, that's the bad news. Now, let's take a look at the good....

re-coat recycled chalkboard paint debuts at Art Prize!
re-coat recyled chalkboard paint made it's debut at Grand Rapids' Art Prize "Top Ten Finalists" party a few weeks ago.
The paint was applied to various surfaces throughout the room and chalkboard artists came through and sketched in many of Grand Rapids' well-known landmarks. During the party, as the guests milled about waiting to hear who the top 10 finalists were, these chalkboard artists went to work on various chalkboards (painted with re-coat) and sketched renditions of each of the top 10 finalists' entries.
The party was a huge hit and we like to think that re-coat was a big part of it! Check out some of the shots:

A Lot of Paint
The US Environmental Protection Agency estimates that over 69 million gallons of paint are discarded every year.
Now, I know the temptation is to buzz right over that sentence and move onto the next, but hold on.... Stop for a second and think about that fact: 69 million gallons of paint are discarded every year. 69 MILLION gallons.
"OK," you're probably thinking, "that's a big number. But still, that doesn't seem totally unreasonable when you think of the size of the US."
